  • Symmetry and Pattern: The Art of Oriental Carpets
(Includes examples of 4th grade student work)

These are very helpful in describing infinite and rich possibilities of repeating elements - not visually restrictive at all:

  • Synthesis & Style Story
    • The students will design on paper a piece of furniture that they would like to have in their room.
    • The furniture must have some purpose.
    • The furniture must have something in decoration or shape or function that tells us something about the student or the student's family.
    • The furniture should borrow at least one element from one of the pieces of furniture that we have seen.
    • The student will write a narrative paragraph describing his/her invention.
    • **If time allows, the students could construct their furniture in 3-D.
