Colonies in a New World
The Spaniards conquered Mexico in 1521 where they established the colony of New Spain. In the 1500s, they extended their rule over much of South America as well. The Hapsburg dynasty ruled in Spain and its colonies in the Americas until the middle of the 1700s.

British settlers formed their first permanent colony in North America at Jamestown, Virginia in 1609. In 1689, following the flight of James II, William III of Orange, a Dutch nobleman, and his wife Mary became king and queen of England.
