"Clio,
Muse of History, represents the Past. the Goddess of the Hunt,
represents Endeavor, Action, therefore, the Present. Euterpe,
Muse of Poetry and Music, both of which give eternal delight,
represents eternity, therefore, the Future."
Miss Hogg
decorated Bayou Bend with three sculptures of these classical
figures that she acquired in Italy in the 1930's. The statues:
Clio, Diana, and Euterpe reside in Miss Hogg's gardens.
In 1927, she
developed her plans for what would be a series of gardens set
along side the bayou woodlands. The gardens at Bayou Bend contain
a variety of native and imported plants; however, azaleas and
camellias dominate.
In 1961, management
of the gardens was turned over to the River Oaks Garden Club.
Through the club's generosity and expertise, the gardens at Bayou
Bend remain Miss Hogg's legacy.
